Flo-Thru-Life "Getting Anger" is an anger management and reflective learning course with a difference, as we use Hip-Hop culture to teach young people life skills. The collective of workshops use social learning theory and a cognitive behavioral style approach to improve young people decision making. Forming a partnership with Flo-Thru-Life is essential for all youth organisations that want to remain at the forefront of the innovative use of music to teach and rehabilitate young people. Over 6 intensive two-hour sessions young people are spoken to in their own language and taken on a rap-music fuelled journey of energy and empowerment that has a genuine chance of changing their life.

Key Principles of Flo-Thru-Life
To use Hip-Hop culture to present information to young people in a fun way.

Believing in young people turning their lives around and then being able to use their experience to benefit their community and then wider society.

Having the belief that if it is delivered in the right way young people can comprehend information that many people would consider to be beyond them.

To enhance young peoples knowledge of certain aspects of sociology and psychology in order to empower them into positive decision making.

To be an advocate for the pro-social powers of Hip-Hop culture, particularly in self esteem being gained from the creative process.

To get young people to look at themselves and the world differently.

To operate with the belief that just a handful of Flo-Thru-Life sessions can be enough to change a participant's life for the better.

To facilitate learning via a participant's imagination as opposed to more conventional methods.

The Benefits To Using Hip-Hop

- Hip-Hop represents so much of what is 'cool' to young people and as Social Learning Theory States - People learn best from what they know and like. If we are to lecture our young people then let it be in their own voice.

- Hip-Hop music like many other genres of soulful music was derived from oppressive situations - it has a natural ability to lift people's spirits and nurture self esteem.

- Enough has happened in Hip-Hop's timeline to provide case studies to facilitate learning on virtually any topic, yet in regard to its potential to educate Hip-Hop remains an under utilised resource. It is time to change that.

- The mood and in vogue subject matter of urban music often reflects the current attitude of its chief creators who are essentially the youth of lower socio-economic status. If we can help improve young artists outlooks this can lead to the creation of more positive themed urban music. Music today is capable of spreading faster than ever and having more socially conscious themed music, reaching a wider audience bring many benefits for society.

- Being creative through one of Hip-Hop's elements, dancing, rapping etc. can be massively helpful in healing damaged self-esteem. All Flo-Thru-Life sessions also act as an advocate for the pro social benefits of being creative and actively partaking in some form of Hip-Hop.

- Hip-Hop has at times been said to be good and at others times been said to be bad, it has also being greatly misunderstood - young people identify with this.

- Young people like to be involved in Hip-Hop culture. Whether it is having heard the latest songs, wearing the latest fashion or even just speaking the latest slang words, young people like to be at the forefront of all things urban. Attending a cutting edge course that uses Hip-Hop and urban culture to will appeal to them.
The Benefits To Society

- Those in society who live in the areas with the highest levels of deprivation are likely to encounter the most anger. It is a core principle of Flo-Thru-Life that we aim to educate these people on the subject of anger.

- Let young people find something in themselves and their communities to be proud of and then use that as a source of inspiration for further growth.

- On 'Getting Anger' we touch on social stereotyping, discussing terms such as 'chav' and 'hoody' and what their implications are.

- Let young people understand some of the problems in society and see what they can do about them. The aim here is to empower young people and provide them with a sense of responsibility.

- Young people are asked to imagine how they can be successful and use what they know to become an asset to their community and society.

- The typical social circumstance that a young person who attends a Youth Offending Team encounters, also often derails their education. Young people, who miss out on education, lose out on more than qualifications, they are denied the empowering and mind-expanding feeling of growth that comes with acquiring new knowledge. If they have previously resisted formal education methods then we must find alternative ways to open young people up to education so they can experience that 'buzz' that comes from learning.
The Benefits To Young People

- Be one of the first young people to experience a new way of group learning, a way that uses Hip-Hop tracks and stories to help young people learn important things about life

- Learn the truth about Anger. It will become apparent Anger is not a straightforward topic but once it is understood the benefits are great.

- Experience a course that is designed to inject young people with a sense of self-esteem, in regards to where they come from and where they want to go.

- Learn and practice methods that make it easier to look both backward and forward in life. This is essential to help motivate young people to achieve.

- Learning memorable techniques that you can use to help you cope in times of stress and anger, these techniques can also be good for helping other people.

- We all know the bad things but what are the benefits of being from what is often just called 'the street' or a 'rough area' or the 'wrong side of town'? Hip-Hop is full of people who came from this these areas, yet went on to do great things. We will look at how they did this.

- If as a young person you think you have a good imagination 'Getting Anger' activities will certainly test this.

- Learn how to better understand the way people think and why they act the way they do. This will help you as a young person to better understand the world.

- If you enjoy a good story many of the activities and discussions come from real life stories, some featuring people you will have heard of and some that you won't, but they are all entertaining.

- If as a young person you are some sort of artist such as an MC, Flo-Thru-Life will help your creative abilities as we teach ways to generate ideas and subjects to rap about.
The Benefits To Communities

- Have young people whom have previously caused problems to their communities experience a course designed to make them more self-aware.

- If a young person in the community displays anger and rage then the community suffers as a result of this. It is a benefit to everyone that the person exhibiting the anger understands 'anger' as a topic. They can then be encouraged to search within themselves, first for the cause of the anger, then secondly, for the solution.

- The 2011 summer riots that negatively impacted several communities are covered in 'Getting Anger' and we look at what we can learn from them as individuals and as a community.

- Negative aspects of life in deprived communities, can if looked at rightly, be used as a source of inspiration and motivation for young people.

- Young people who find themselves in trouble with the law often live turbulent lives and are surrounded by anger. If they can leave 'Getting Anger' informed about anger as a subject, then they have the potential to help alleviate anger in and around them.

- We look at how anger can spread from person to person and then how it can affect communities.

- Young people from communities of lower socio status are explained why they should be proud of their social class; for what it has previously achieved through art and especially music.

- Gang Problems stem from young people seeking a sense of belonging; by encouraging them to participate in the Hip-Hop elements they can get this feeling from a Hip-Hop crew/group.
